Top 5 and Bottom 5 Movies of 2011

This year at the movies, I was generally impressed by most of the movies I watched – and although this year’s best movies haven’t been quite up to scratch with the best of previous years, it has been a more consistent year all round. There weren’t any movies that were quite the apple in my eye the same way Inception was, neither were there any movies that ticked every box in the awful category like The Last Airbender. This is my list of favorite and least favorite movies of 2011.

The Adventures of Tintin

It’s not so much the journey as it is the adventure

I’ve had some experience with Tintin in the past since I watched the cartoon several years ago and this movie totally took me back. Not to mention, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson working on the same movie, winning combination! The overall result is a movie that delivers on the promises of its crew and captures the spirit of Hergé’s creations.

War Horse

Poor horse

This year, Steven Spielberg has released two movies on Boxing Day. This one, and The Adventures of Tintin. If war and horses are more your thing than mo-capped hi-jinks, then you’re most likely to get something out of this movie.

My Top 5 Most Anticipated Films of 2012

Next year seems to look like the climax of all cinematic history, since we’ve got long awaited superhero sequels and mash-ups, the ending of a hugely popular novel-to-movie franchise and the beginning of another, an animation powerhouse in need to redeem itself and a long awaited prequel to a much-loved book series that’s set to blow the box office through the roof. If that’s not enough to get you absolutely ecstatic, what will? So here is my list of the movies I’m most anticipating next year.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Mission accomplished

Despite that it under-performed at the box office, JJ Abrams set the bar very high for the Mission: Impossible series with the third film. Succeeding Abrams as director now is Brad Bird, best known for his work with Pixar directing The Incredibles and Ratatouille. He has brought most of his Pixar sensibilities with him in a slick transition to live action in what is the best Mission: Impossible film to date.

5 Most Overplayed Songs in 2011

For the most part, this year has been a headache on repeat for those who appreciate listening to good music. For every Coldplay, or Adele or Florence and the Machine, there is an LMFAO, a Skrillex, a Britney Spears, a David Guetta or a Jason Derulo. We all know the general public’s taste of music is sickeningly mediocre, and that is how so much so called “music” tops the charts. The public’s excuse is, they think proper music is boring! So I compiled a list of the most annoying songs of 2011 that were overplayed and got on my nerves. (Hint: Friday doesn’t count because it was a viral song)

Puss In Boots

All you need…are the boots

We can all agree that Shrek The Third was a complete letdown whilst its sequel Shrek Forever After was better, but it still failed to meet the standards of the first two films. Now, eighteen months after the (supposedly) final Shrek film, we get a prequel spin-off based on Puss In Boots, which serves as a great antidote to its two ho-hum predecessors.

Talk That Talk – Rihanna

Good Girl Gone Bad 2: Rated NC-17

We’ve known Rihanna over the last four years since Good Girl Gone Bad to be a ginormous showgirl, occasionally of the wrong kind. The problem with Talk That Talk is it passes the line of showy, and it veers way too far into radio-friendly territory. As a vocalist, she makes up for not writing her songs by giving something of herself into her work, but on this album she just seems bored.
