Hugo

A movie for true movie veterans

Martin Scorsese is famous for his graphic portrayals of violence in movies, so the question many would ask is – why head into family friendly territory? His experiment has paid off with tremendous results with a movie which for a much needed change, doesn’t treat children like they’re stupid and gives loving respect to early cinema.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

As weak as the water the island sinks in

My first movie of 2012 (from the American calendar and since I’m from Australia, some year end movies are released late, although this is early). Mixed expectations. Yay, there’s much to look to forward to this year, nay, we have to go through tripe like this to get there. Sure, there’s CGI and 3D thrills galore, but it all has a real “Been there, done that” feel. The movie is overall mired in generic, formulaic storytelling that generates very little interest for its viewers.

Tower Heist

Eddie Murphy back in action (after how long?)

I despise Brett Ratner, especially after the inexcusably terrible X-Men 3. This movie is certainly much better, though I don’t think he could redeem himself – even with a masterpiece of a movie. My undying hatred of Brett Ratner aside, Tower Heist is a solid action comedy putting Eddie Murphy back in the landscape he fits in best – his 80′s action comedies.

Blackout to protest SOPA

SOPA is going to take away the rights of freedom of speech and make it much harder to find information on the internet that people truly deserve. It won’t just be WordPress that will be affected, but also Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Google and even email providers among several others. The internet as we know it will potentially collapse if drastic action is not taken if bloggers like us do not take a stand. We deserve freedom of speech and freedom of knowledge and the US government shouldn’t take away that right.

UPDATE: The protest period has passed. It took place on January 18.

Fast forward casting: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games is now less than 70 days away from release, and it has been named as the most anticipated movie of this year – and a November 2013 release has been confirmed for the sequel, Catching Fire. Whilst the book doesn’t quite reach the standards of the original, there are plenty of lively (and less lively) new characters introduced to the series. This is my list of actors who I think are the best fits for the series’ new characters.

New Look!

A notice to my readers, I have officially changed the look of this blog as you can see. I wanted to change it to something that looked more arty and fresh. On important dates, such as launches for movies I’m anticipating and for my short movies at Filmbites, you’ll be able to see a change in background for the day.

Hope you guys like the new look!

The 10 Greatest Gaga Songs

Lady Gaga is easily one of the biggest greats of pop over the last five years, and she has proved many genre naysayers wrong about her musicianship which is surprisingly strong. Since she not only sings, but she writes, produces, is a multi-instrumentalist and writes her songs for piano. Her most successful songs have become some of the most famous pop songs of the century, and here is my list of what her greatest songs are:

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

A well done sequel. Case closed

I’m on the side of people who think the original is absolutely brilliant, no matter how much purists griped over it – and they seem to be griping over this one too. Maybe that’s because people don’t respond well to re-imagings. This sequel doesn’t quite reach the standards of the first, however it’s still very much worth the watch.

Happy Feet Two

Doesn’t leave you cold or set on fire

As much as I hugely enjoyed the original, the notion of this sequel was mildly unsettling, since this is one penguin kids’ movie too many. After hearing how this movie failed with critics and the box office, I was ready to tear this movie to shreds. It isn’t as good as the original, sure, but it’s feel good stuff the current movie landscape is missing.
