A great time even if it goes where many have gone before
I’m no Trekkie, but I seriously enjoyed J.J Abrams’ 2009 prequel/reboot of the Star Trek franchise. It was a fresh, fun and well acted update. This sequel boldly goes where many event movies of the last few years have gone before, but it has no problem getting there.
A little behind in the animation evolutionary series
Given that The Croods has been in development for the last eight years, it’s easy to see why it isn’t a continuation for DreamWorks’ more mature post-Shrek direction, but it feels like a loss of quality control at the same time, reverting back to old habits with a derivative storyline and an overabundance of slapstick.
Drop dead entertaining
Like a human/vampire romance wasn’t ridiculous enough, a human/zombie romance is just a recipe for disaster. Yet Warm Bodies avoids becoming another brainless Twilight clone with its brilliant pieces of body comedy and by offering more that’s new to the zombie genre than just the romance.
Marvel kicks off Phase 2 with a bang
Iron Man 3 is carrying some lofty expectations behind it, especially after Iron Man 2 paled in comparison with the first Iron Man and The Avengers was phenomenal. Does it live up to either of the said movies? No, but it’s still a solid entry to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and then some.
Oblivious to cohesive storytelling
Joseph Kosinksi was an architect before he became a director, which showed in both Tron: Legacy and in this movie. Like his last movie, he proves he can craft some beautiful and imaginative visuals but can’t tell a story that lives up to them.
G.I Joe: Recycled
Hasbro movies are a guilty pleasure of mine, but I hated G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The modest pleasures that come with these movies were non-existent, even the visual effects were poor. This sequel however, is better than its predecessor, which isn’t saying much.
Fee…Fye….Fo….umm?
Like Oz the Great and Powerful, Jack the Giant Slayer is the next wannabe epic fantasy re-imagining looking to be the next Alice in Wonderland. Except it it’s too silly to be truly epic and draw in an adult audience, and too violent and disgusting for kids, making the movie feel demographically confused and tonally inconsistent.
Let the human inside of you tell you this is a waste of time
Now Twilight‘s over, Hollywood’s been looking everywhere for the franchise that can replace it, meaning there’ll be dozens of romanticised, watered down genre clones coming to a theatre near you, starting with this one.
It’s not quite worth going off to see the wizard
Oz arrives in the exact same mould as Tim’s Burton Alice in Wonderland, as a CG-heavy adult fairytale re-imagining with a handful of inspired moments, but it ultimately rings hollow and is not on the same level of its classic 1939 pre-cursor.
Hail to the chief
It’s always a surprise and a delight to see Steven Spielberg display his versatility with films such as this one, and with a remarkable central performance from Daniel-Day Lewis, Lincoln is a harrowing chronicle of one of the most difficult times in American history.
